According to The Financial News, a video showing a man setting fire to a statue of global football star Cristiano Ronaldo in his hometown of Madeira, Portugal, has been made public, prompting police to search for the suspect.
On the 20th (local time), the UK’s Daily Mail and other outlets reported that Portuguese police are tracking a man who set fire to a Ronaldo statue at the CR7 Museum in Funchal, Madeira.
The man poured a flammable liquid over the statue, set it alight, and then danced around it, filming the scene himself before posting the footage on a social networking service (SNS).
The man, who described himself as a local resident and an impromptu performance artist, posted the video with the caption, "This is God's final warning."
The flames briefly engulfed the entire statue but soon died down, and it has not yet been confirmed whether the statue was damaged.
Online users and Cristiano Ronaldo fans who saw the video strongly condemned the act, responding with comments such as, "What you did was unnecessary and only for likes," and, "Don’t invoke God’s name for something like this."
A Funchal police official, who said they had identified the suspect, told local media, "The suspect is already known here for similar incidents in the past."
The museum said, "The case is being handled by the police, and we have nothing further to add."
The statue in question is a bronze work unveiled in 2014 that drew worldwide attention at the time for its exaggerated depiction of Ronaldo’s physique.
In 2016, fans of Lionel Messi vandalized the statue, after which it was moved to its current location.
