The Financial News reported that the KOSPI, which had opened the era of the so-called "dream 5,000-point KOSPI," slipped back below the 5,000 mark due to foreign investors’ selling.
As of 1:56 p.m. on the 22nd, the KOSPI was trading at 4,989.50, up 79.57 points (1.62%) from the previous session.
The KOSPI opened at 4,987.06, up 77.13 points (1.57%), and extended its gains to break through the 5,000 level. It climbed as high as 5,019.54 during the session, but later gave up part of its advance amid selling by foreign investors.
Individual investors provided support to the index with net purchases of 867.2 billion won. Foreign investors and institutions showed net selling of 982.6 billion won and 76.1 billion won, respectively.
Market sentiment appears to have improved following United States of America (U.S.) President Donald John Trump’s decision to withdraw his "Greenland tariffs."

Chip stocks were particularly strong, with Nvidia Corporation up 2.95% and Micron Technology rising 6.61%, pushing the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) up 3.18%.
In the KOSPI market, semiconductor shares also stood out. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix were up 3.95% and 2.91%, respectively.
Among other large-cap stocks, LG Energy Solution, SK Square, Samsung C&T, and Celltrion were gaining, while Hyundai Motor, Samsung Biologics, Hanwha Aerospace, Kia, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries were weaker.
Meanwhile, at the same time, the Korea Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (KOSDAQ) was trading at 969.52, up 18.23 points (1.92%) from the previous session. The KOSDAQ opened at 963.77, up 12.48 points (1.31%), and has since extended its gains.
