The Financial News has learned that police have launched a compulsory investigation into allegations that the second son of independent politician Kim Byung-ki received preferential treatment in his transfer to Soongsil University and in his hiring.
According to reporting by The Financial News, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) Metropolitan Investigation Unit’s Public Crime Investigation Unit began a search at 10:35 a.m. on the 22nd at three locations, including Company A in Geumcheon District, Seoul, where Kim’s second son had been employed.
Police carried out the raid to determine whether there were any illegalities in the overall process of his transfer into a Contract-based Department at Soongsil University and in his hiring by the company.
Former aides to Kim had previously alleged that his second son, identified only by the surname Kim, received special favors when transferring into a Contract-based Department at Soongsil University. They claimed he was recorded as if he were employed by Company A in order to meet transfer criteria that require current employment at a company.
Police recently questioned Company A’s chief executive, identified as B, as a witness and then changed his status to that of a suspect on charges of bribery and obstruction of business. Based on materials seized in the raid, investigators plan to comprehensively examine whether Kim’s second son actually worked at the company, the legality of the transfer and hiring process, and whether lawmaker Kim was involved.
