[Financial News] The Special Prosecutor Team for Insurrection and Treason, led by Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-seok, will continue to pursue its case against former President Yoon Suk Yeol over charges including obstruction of arrest.
On the morning of the 22nd, the special prosecutor team announced in a press notice, "The special prosecutor has filed an appeal regarding the first-trial ruling in the case involving former President Yoon, including obstruction of the execution of an arrest warrant, challenging both the acquittal portion and the sentence imposed."
On the 16th, Criminal Agreement Division 35 of the Seoul Central District Court (Chief Judge Baek Dae-hyun) sentenced former President Yoon to a five-year prison term on charges including obstruction of special official duties. In this case, the special prosecutor team had requested a 10-year sentence for Yoon.
In the first-trial ruling, the court found Yoon guilty on four of the five charges brought by the special prosecutor team: obstruction of an arrest by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) (obstruction of special official duties), infringement of cabinet members' authority to deliberate on martial law (abuse of power), approval of the ex post drafting and destruction of the martial law proclamation (preparation of false official documents, etc.), and ordering the deletion of secure phone records (instigation of abuse of power). The court acquitted him of the charge of providing false information to foreign media.
