According to The Financial News, a man who ran while holding a baby in a marathon in Hong Kong was disqualified for violating race rules, and police have now launched an investigation after receiving a child abuse report.
On the 22nd, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that Hong Kong police had received a complaint alleging child abuse by the man who took part in the marathon while holding a baby, and that they are looking into the matter.
Police said they had received a report the previous day that a man from mainland China had committed child abuse.
The man took part in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon held on the morning of the 18th and was running with the baby in his arms when race officials intervened. The organizers disqualified him for breaching competition rules.
Video shared on social networking service (SNS) platforms shows the man starting the race with the baby in a front carrier. He supported the baby's neck with one hand and moved at a relatively slow pace, but the footage captured the baby's head repeatedly bobbing up and down as he ran, prompting a wave of criticism. The organizers were also criticized for lax race management.
Other runners appeared startled when they noticed the baby while running, with some turning their heads to look back in surprise.
According to official records, the man started at 6:25 a.m. and covered about 15 kilometers in 2 hours and 20 minutes. His average speed was around 6.5 kilometers per hour.
The outlet noted that while there are occasional cases of people running races with children in strollers, it is highly unusual to see someone running with a baby strapped to their chest while also wearing a backpack.
The Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA), which organized the event, stated, "Runners must comply with the official competition rules and refrain from any behavior during the race that could endanger themselves or others."
It added, "For safety reasons, race officials immediately asked the violating runner to withdraw from the race and leave the course. This man will be banned from all future events."
According to police, the man is a Chinese national living in Nanning, Guangxi Province, China, who visited Hong Kong to take part in the marathon and has since returned home.
A police official said, "Since a child abuse report has been filed, we plan to summon this man for questioning."
