[Financial News] A man in his 40s who assaulted three foreigners for no apparent reason has been taken into police custody.
On the 19th, Seogwipo Police Station in Jeju announced that it had apprehended a man in his 40s, identified only by his surname A, on suspicion of assault and was questioning him.
A is suspected of having assaulted three foreigners for no apparent reason on a bus and at a bus stop in the Seogwipo area on the 13th.
At around 11:30 a.m. on the day of the incident, A allegedly boarded a bus operating in the Andeok-myeon area of Seogwipo City and slapped the forehead of a woman in her 20s from Australia, who was sitting alone, with his palm.
Around noon the same day, A allegedly struck a man in his 60s from the Philippines in the same manner at a bus stop in Andeok-myeon, and at about 1:40 p.m. he is said to have transferred to a bus running through the Daejeong-eup area of Seogwipo City, where he bumped a woman in her 20s from the Republic of South Africa with his shoulder and then hit her on the forehead.
After receiving reports from the victims, police tracked A down by reviewing closed-circuit (CC) TV footage and found him at his mother's shop in Jeju City, where they brought him in for questioning without detention.
A is reportedly suffering from a mental illness.
At first, A denied the allegations during police questioning, saying he could not remember the incident, but he eventually admitted to the assaults.
Police plan to investigate A further to determine the exact circumstances of the incident and, with his family's consent, have him admitted to a psychiatric hospital for treatment.
