[Financial News] A Pokémon trading card store in New York City in the United States was robbed at gunpoint, suffering losses worth hundreds of millions of won.
According to reports on the 17th (local time) from outlets including USA Today, at around 6:45 p.m. on the 14th three masked, armed robbers stormed into a Pokémon trading card store in Manhattan and made off with Pokémon-related products worth about $100,000 (approximately 150 million won).
At the time, the store was hosting a "community craft event" where about 40 people had gathered to decorate cases used to store cards.
The store said, "Three armed robbers locked more than 40 people inside the shop and stole our merchandise."
In the released closed-circuit (CC) TV footage, men wearing black hoodies, masks, and gloves can be seen smashing glass display cases and pointing guns at customers.
Police said the suspects took various products and cash, including high-value cards priced at $5,500 (about 8.11 million won) and $3,500 (about 5.16 million won) per card.
Fortunately, no one was injured, but the total damage is estimated at around $100,000 (approximately 150 million won).
Police are pursuing the suspects.
Meanwhile, as some Pokémon TCG cards have been trading at high prices among collectors, crimes targeting shops that sell Pokémon collectible cards have recently been occurring one after another in the United States.
In December last year, about $100,000 (approximately 150 million won) worth of Pokémon cards and sports cards were stolen from a card shop in Burbank, California. Police identified four suspects in about a month and referred the case to prosecutors.
