[Financial News] Police have launched an investigation into allegations that residents at a facility for people with disabilities in Ganghwa County, Incheon, were subjected to ongoing sexual abuse by the facility director.
According to police on the 19th, the Women and Juvenile Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) has booked the head of the Saekdongwon residential facility for people with severe developmental disabilities in Ganghwa County, Incheon, identified only by the initial A, on charges including rape and forcible molestation of persons with disabilities under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes, and is investigating the case.
Around May last year, police opened a preliminary inquiry based on a tip from a related party, identified four victims, and carried out interviews with those involved. In September of the same year, they executed a search and seizure at the facility and also implemented measures to separate female residents.
Last month, police obtained the In-depth Investigation Report on Residents of Saekdongwon, prepared by a private research institute, and plan to expand the investigation to additional victims. The report is said to contain statements from all 17 female residents with disabilities and two former residents, 19 people in total, describing sexual harm they suffered at the hands of A.
A police official stated, "We are currently focusing on clearly establishing the facts of the alleged crimes."
