The Financial News – NBC News reported on the 18th (local time) that President Donald Trump of the United States of America (U.S.), who has signaled his desire to annex Greenland, a territory of Denmark, now appears likely to fixate on Canada.
According to the broadcast, President Donald Trump has recently come to believe that Canada is increasingly vulnerable to encroachment by China and Russia, and he is seeking ways to work with the Canadian government to discuss strengthening border security.
The U.S. official said that President Donald Trump, who has even referred to Canada as the 51st state of the U.S., is not trying to annex Canada as he has sought to do with Greenland, and instead plans to work with Prime Minister Mark Carney to bolster Canada’s security.
He explained that protecting Canada, which lies to the north of the U.S., aligns with President Donald Trump’s fundamental goal of strengthening the Western Hemisphere and, ultimately, of blocking the expansion of China and Russia into the Arctic.
Citing the U.S. official, NBC News reported that the U.S. government is not discussing deploying troops near the Canadian border and, unlike in Greenland’s case, is not pursuing the purchase or military occupation of Canada.
The anonymous U.S. government official said, “President Donald Trump is concerned that the U.S. is continuing to drift in the Western Hemisphere, and that is why he is focusing on this issue.”
Supporters of Trump view a military operation in Venezuela, the annexation of Greenland, and warnings of intervention in Cuba, the Republic of Colombia, and Mexico as essential to preventing foreign interference in the Western Hemisphere.
NBC News reported that President Donald Trump believes that the U.S. securing Greenland would also be beneficial for Canada’s security.
