[The Financial News] A story has emerged of a woman who says her company took away her corporate card after she used it every day to pay 20,000 won for lunch at her older sister's café.
According to an online workplace community on the 19th, a post was recently uploaded under the title, "Am I the one in the wrong?"
The poster, identified as A, explained that the company provided telecommuting employees with lunch expenses via a corporate card, setting the rule as "must be used during working hours, with a daily limit of 20,000 won."
A wrote, "I’ve been paying 20,000 won every day at the café my older sister runs near my home, but suddenly someone from accounting called and said, ‘I’ve never seen anyone max out 20,000 won at the same place every single day. We’re not giving you a corporate card anymore; we’ll just pay you a meal allowance instead,’ and they really scolded me. I don’t know what I did wrong."
She continued, "I really paid for my meals, and the only thing is that the place I ate at was my sister’s shop," adding, "My sister even created a 20,000-won menu item because of me. I used it as a meal allowance for an actual menu item they sell. There was no cashback, it wasn’t some kind of cash advance scheme with the card, and I didn’t make any profit from it," expressing her frustration.
She went on to stress again, "They said meals were covered up to 20,000 won, so is it wrong that I ate a 20,000-won meal at my sister’s café every day? I didn’t violate any rules."
A then complained, "I thought the company was telling us to go ahead and spend up to that amount. But they talked as if I was the one at fault, and now it looks like I’m going to get badmouthed by other employees, which feels really unfair."
After reading the story, online commenters wrote, "What you did is literally embezzlement. If the café owner is your sister and she created a 20,000-won menu item just for you, you’d have nothing to say even if the company fired you," "The issue isn’t the amount; it’s that you went to your sister’s place every day and had her create a non-existent 20,000-won menu just so you could charge it," "A spending limit is a ‘maximum,’ not an amount you’re supposed to use every single day," and "You used company funds to continually boost your family member’s sales and still insist you did nothing wrong."
