A former aide to independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo, identified only by the surname Nam and accused of receiving 100 million won in nomination kickbacks from Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kim Kyung and passing it on to Kang, arrives at the Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) in Mapo-gu, Seoul, on the morning of the 17th to undergo a second round of police questioning.
[The Financial News] Police investigating allegations of a 100 million won nomination bribe have summoned the former aide to independent lawmaker Kang Sun-woo for questioning.
The Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) summoned Nam, Kang’s former aide, as a reference witness on the morning of the 17th. Nam had already been questioned by police on the 6th.
Investigators are expected to use Nam’s questioning to once again verify the facts surrounding how Seoul Metropolitan Council member Kim Kyung allegedly delivered the 100 million won in nomination kickbacks.
Key figures in the nomination kickback scandal are offering conflicting accounts. During an earlier police interview, Kim Kyung reportedly testified that, ahead of the 2022 local elections, Nam first proposed delivering a nomination bribe. Kim is said to have claimed that he met Kang and Nam at a café and, when Nam briefly stepped away, handed 100 million won directly to Kang.
In his police questioning on the 6th, Nam acknowledged meeting Kim together with Kang but said he briefly left the table and therefore had no knowledge that any nomination money changed hands. He claims that afterward Kang instructed him to "move the items to the car," and that he transferred the bags to the trunk without knowing they contained cash.
Kang, for her part, maintains that she "never received any money whatsoever." Police plan to summon Kang for questioning on the 20th.
