[Financial News] Newly appointed Minister of the National Court Administration PARK Young Jae pledged to identify the causes of public distrust in the judiciary and achieve judicial reform.
In his inaugural address held on the morning of the 16th at the Supreme Court of Korea in Seocho District, Seoul, Minister PARK stated, "We must identify and correct the fundamental causes of distrust in the judiciary," adding, "Now may be the right time to set the direction for a future judicial system that serves the people and to identify and implement new tasks."
He continued, "The reason the public is calling so strongly for change in the judiciary is likely because the judiciary has fallen short in earning the people’s trust," and explained, "To address this, I will keep an open mind and communicate with members of the judiciary, while also striving to engage in dialogue and persuasion with the public, including related institutions such as the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea and the Executive Branch of the Republic of Korea."
Minister PARK also spoke about the achievements of the judiciary. He said, "The strengthening of the judiciary’s guardianship and welfare functions, centered on the Family Court and the Rehabilitation Court, also reflects the expectations the public has of today’s judiciary," adding, "We have worked to resolve trial delays by securing budgets to reinforce fact-finding at trial, increasing the number of Judges and judicial researchers, expanding judicial personnel, extending the duration of case assignments for Judges, and having court presidents take on trial duties, thereby refocusing judicial administration on alleviating trial backlogs."
He further encouraged staff by saying, "You are facing the powerful waves of change on the very front lines," and, "In this extraordinary situation where multiple judicial reform proposals are being discussed simultaneously, I am deeply grateful for the devoted efforts you have made for the public and for your colleagues."
He added, "As public servants, we must uphold the Constitution and faithfully carry out our duties, no matter how difficult the circumstances," and continued, "I will take the lead in this myself and do my utmost to create an atmosphere and environment in which you can carry out your work without wavering."
