[Financial News] At least 32 people have been killed after a collapsed crane at a high-speed rail construction site in Thailand fell onto a passing train, and it has been confirmed that among the dead was a Korean man who died together with his Thai wife. The tragedy is all the more heartbreaking as the Korean man was reportedly on his way to his wife’s family home after recently registering their marriage.
According to South Korean diplomatic authorities on the 15th (local time), among those who died in the train accident that occurred the previous day at a high-speed rail construction site in Nakhon Ratchasima Province in central Thailand were a Korean man in his late 30s, identified as A, and his Thai wife.
A, who had frequently traveled between South Korea and Thailand and had been in a long-term relationship with his wife, recently entered Thailand and registered their marriage at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Thailand in Bangkok. He was on his way the previous day to Sisaket Province in the east, where his wife’s family is based, when the fatal accident occurred.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Thailand has notified A’s bereaved family in South Korea of the accident and is providing consular assistance, including support for their entry into Thailand. The embassy has also dispatched staff to a hospital near the accident site where the victims’ bodies are being kept and is expected to assist with funeral arrangements.
On the morning of the previous day, at an elevated high-speed rail construction site in the Sikhio area of Nakhon Ratchasima Province, a crane collapsed and fell onto the existing railway below the site. It crashed onto two carriages of a train traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani Province in the east.
As a result, the carriages derailed and a fire broke out, killing 32 people so far and leaving 3 others missing. Another 64 people were injured, 7 of whom are in critical condition.
According to local media, construction work was underway at the site to build an elevated high-speed rail line above the existing tracks. The accident is believed to have occurred when the crane collapsed while lifting a concrete beam to be installed on the elevated structure.
