[Financial News] Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon of Sarang Jeil Church has launched a legal response by filing a request for a review of the legality of his detention. Jeon was taken into custody on the 13th on charges including incitement to commit aggravated trespass into a building, after being identified as the instigator behind the disturbance that occurred at the Seoul Western District Court on January 19 last year.
According to the legal community on the 15th, Jeon submitted his request for a review of the legality of his detention to the Seoul Western District Court the previous day. A review of the legality of detention is a procedure in which a detained suspect asks the court to reexamine whether the detention is lawful and whether there is a continuing need for detention. Once such a request is filed, the court must conduct a hearing of the suspect and an examination of evidence within 48 hours.
In response, Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court (Presiding Judge Kim Woo-hyun of the 11th Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Court) is scheduled to hold a hearing on Jeon’s request for a review of his detention starting at around 10:30 a.m. today. Jeon is suspected of having exercised psychological control by exploiting religious faith and providing financial support to systematically manage close associates and certain conservative-leaning YouTubers, and of having incited protesters to storm the Seoul Western District Court in January last year.
On the 13th, after conducting a substantive warrant review hearing for Jeon, the Seoul Western District Court issued an arrest warrant, stating that “there is concern that evidence may be destroyed and that he may flee.” Earlier, on the 7th, the Security Investigation Division, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency applied for arrest warrants for Jeon and Shin Hye-sik, head of the YouTube channel Sinihan Su, on the same charges, but prosecutors sought an arrest warrant only for Jeon.
