[Financial News] A warning has been issued that eating pork that is not thoroughly cooked can lead to parasitic infection. In fact, a 48-year-old man in India reportedly developed cysticercosis, a condition in which larval cysticerci spread throughout the body and form tumors, after frequently eating undercooked pork.
Experts stress that pork must be fully cooked before consumption to prevent parasitic infection. Eating meat that is not properly cooked can increase the risk of becoming infected with parasites.
Nodules appearing across the body, including the abdomen, over several years
According to a case reported in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, the 48-year-old man developed nodules in various parts of his body, including the abdomen, over several years. The initial lesions appeared on his shoulders and chest, but later spread to his legs, back, and face. He also complained of intermittent headaches.
The man, who was known to regularly eat pork, was found during a dermatological examination to have multiple nodules. The nodules ranged in size from about 0.5 cm to 3–4 cm. Blood tests and electrocardiography showed no abnormalities and were within normal limits, but a biopsy of the nodules revealed that they were caused by larval cysticerci, a parasitic infection.
"Cysticerci can infect subcutaneous tissue, lungs, and eyes"
The man was prescribed antiparasitic medication and began treatment. The medical team explained, "Cysticercosis is mainly contracted by eating meat that is not properly cooked" and added, "It is more likely to occur in areas with poor hygiene." They continued, "Cysticerci can infect subcutaneous tissue, the lungs, and the eyes," noting, "When the subcutaneous tissue is infected, nodules of various sizes can appear all over the body."
Cysticercosis develops when a person is infected with cysticerci, the larval form of Taenia solium, and is characterized by the formation of nodules in various tissues of the body. In this case, the man had nodules concentrated on the surface of his body, particularly on the chest and abdomen. The condition usually does not cause pain, but if inflammation occurs, pain or swelling may develop. It can go unnoticed for a long time and then grow to several centimeters in size.
