[Financial News] Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, said that there will be no military attack by the United States of America (USA) on Mexico after holding a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump.
On the 12th (local time), The Associated Press (AP) and other foreign media reported that President Sheinbaum had a roughly 15-minute phone conversation with President Trump and that the two governments agreed to continue cooperating so that there would be no U.S. military intervention in Mexico for a crackdown on Mexican drug cartels.
Having expressed her willingness to hold talks with the United States last week on the 9th, President Sheinbaum said at a regular press briefing that day that she had a “very good conversation” with President Trump, rejected the proposal for U.S. military intervention, and hinted at the possibility of additional calls.
President Sheinbaum stressed that the volume of Fentanyl flowing from Mexico into the USA fell by about 50% last year.
On X (formerly Twitter), Sheinbaum wrote that “we discussed a wide range of topics, including security issues related to our sovereignty, as well as reducing drug trafficking and investment.”
Last week, U.S. President Trump, in an interview with Fox News, raised the level of pressure by suggesting the possibility of a military attack, saying that drug cartels control Mexico and that, to fight them, the USA could strike ground targets in Mexico.
President Sheinbaum also said that if the USA and Cuba enter into negotiations, Mexico would be willing to act as a mediator.
