[Financial News] Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, Inc., has drawn attention by claiming that Optimus, Tesla, Inc.’s humanoid robot, could replace the world’s top surgeons within three years.
According to multiple foreign media outlets, including The Independent in the United Kingdom, on the 8th (local time), Musk appeared on the podcast "Moonshots," hosted by American physician and engineer Peter H. Diamandis, and, while describing the future medical system, asserted that Optimus could replace doctors within three years.
Musk said, "It takes an incredibly long time to become an excellent doctor, and even if you acquire the knowledge, it is hard to keep up with everything," adding, "Human doctors have limited time and they also make mistakes."
He went on to argue, "Assuming mass production, in three years there will be more Optimus robots on Earth that are better than all human surgeons." When the host asked, "Are you saying people shouldn’t go to medical school?" Musk replied, "Yes. At some point it will become an expensive hobby," suggesting there will be no need to attend medical school.
Experts, however, are skeptical of Musk’s claims. Arthur L. Caplan of NYU Langone Medical Center countered, "The claim that Optimus will become a better surgeon than the world’s best human doctors within three years is not credible."
Caplan also predicted, "In particular, in fields such as plastic surgery, burn treatment, and trauma care, human skill has reached a level that is close to art, and it will be impossible for many years to develop surgical programs that can match that."
