[Financial News] Ihn Yo-han, a former lawmaker of the People Power Party who resigned from the National Assembly last month, lamented in connection with the December 3 Martial Law that “looking at what has been revealed over the year since martial law was declared, I feel deeply disappointed and humiliated.”
On the 12th, on his YouTube channel, Ihn posted a statement congratulating Lee So-hee, who succeeded him as a proportional-representation member of the National Assembly, on taking her seat, and made these remarks.
Recalling that time, Ihn said, “When martial law was declared a year ago, I believed that a national emergency had occurred that the president could not fully explain to the people,” adding, “I thought that the martial law declared by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea must have some urgent and compelling reason.”
He went on to stress, “I know all too well how horrific and irreversible wrongful martial law can be, because I myself suffered for three years under police surveillance after being branded a protest ringleader for interpreting for foreign correspondents during the Gwangju Democratization Movement in May 1980.”
Reiterating, “I am a failed lawmaker. But both when I was in the National Assembly and now that I am not, I love the Republic of Korea (South Korea),” Ihn added, “I hope that Lee So-hee, who is far wiser and more capable than I am, will become a successful lawmaker, and I believe she will.”
At a press conference on the 10th of last month, Ihn had announced his resignation from the National Assembly, saying, “The unfortunate events that followed the declaration of martial law must be overcome for the future of South Korea. Only by moving beyond black-and-white thinking and factional logic can we achieve national unity,” and pledging, “I will be the first to give up all vested interests.”
