[Financial News] The People Power Party has officially begun the process of revising its name ahead of the June local elections. This comes five and a half years after the party changed its name from the United Future Party to the People Power Party in September 2020. The People Power Party plans to hold a nationwide contest for a new party name starting this afternoon and change the party name before the Lunar New Year holiday.
At the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 12th, People Power Party Secretary General Jeong Hee-yong announced, "As a follow-up measure to Representative Jang Dong-hyuk's press conference on 'Winning Change,' we conducted a survey of 774,000 former party members via mobile phone and ARS to collect their opinions on changing the party name." He continued, "As a result, the response rate was 25.24%, and of these, 133,000 people, or 68.19% of party members, were in favor of changing the party name."
Earlier, People Power Party Representative Jang Dong-hyuk announced the party reform plan on the 7th and declared that he would begin the process of changing the party name as the beginning of 'Winning Change.' He said, "We will reestablish the party's values and direction and push for a name change after asking all party members for their opinions." The People Power Party collected opinions on the party name revision from responsible party members for three days from the 9th to the 11th and also accepted suggestions for a new name.
The People Power Party plans to hold a party name contest open to all citizens, which will run from the afternoon of that day until the weekend. The contest will be led by Representative Seo Ji-young, head of the Public Relations Headquarters, and the plan is to finalize the name revision process in February after expert review.
Park Sung-hoon, the People Power Party's senior spokesperson, met with reporters after the meeting and emphasized, "The principle is to complete the party name revision before the Lunar New Year," adding, "With the name revision as a starting point, we will push forward without a hitch the 'winning change' that Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk has emphasized."
While the party name suggested by responsible party members was not specifically mentioned, it is known that many words such as "Republic," "Freedom," and "Future" were suggested. Senior Spokesperson Park added, "There were many party names that included 'Republic' or 'Freedom,' and there was also 'Future,' signifying that we must move forward into the future." He added, "The final name will be one that the public and party members can relate to and feel the change in."
It has been reported that a change to the party color, which has been maintained as red since the Saenuri Party, has not been considered. Spokesperson Park drew the line, saying, "As far as I know, there are many party members who do not want a color change," and added, "We will comprehensively review it."
Accordingly, the People Power Party is expected to run in the local elections under its new name. This will be the first change since adopting the new name of the People Power Party in September 2020. Previously, the People Power Party used names such as the Grand National Party, Saenuri Party, Liberty Korea Party, and United Future Party.
Meanwhile, Representative Jang plans to unveil additional reform plans, including talent recruitment and policy changes, as a follow-up to the press conference on the 7th.
