According to Financial News, a man in his 30s in Pennsylvania was arrested after allegedly stealing more than 100 bodies from 26 cemeteries and keeping the remains in his home.
On the 9th local time, foreign media including ABC News reported that local police had detained 34-year-old Jonathan Gerlach on charges of stealing and possessing human remains.
Since November last year, Gerlach is accused of unlawfully entering 26 cemeteries across Pennsylvania, removing bodies, and storing the remains at his residence.
He was caught at the scene after a bag containing skulls and the remains of children was found in his car, which was parked at a cemetery on the outskirts of Philadelphia.
Earlier, while investigating a series of grave robberies, police had identified Gerlach as a suspect after his vehicle was repeatedly spotted near several crime scenes.
During a subsequent search of his home, officers discovered more than 100 sets of skeletal remains displayed in bizarre arrangements in the basement.
An officer who witnessed the scene recounted, "It was unbelievable. It felt like a horror movie had come to life."
Some of the remains are believed to have been buried more than 200 years ago, while others were found with implanted devices such as artificial cardiac pacemakers still attached.
Police also recovered numerous pieces of jewelry, thought to have been taken from the graves along with the remains.
Investigators are examining a Facebook account titled "Bone Trading Group," where they found photos of Gerlach, to determine how it is connected to the crimes.
The exact motive behind the offenses has not yet been determined.
