[The Financial News] Actor Song Seung-hwan has spoken candidly about the hardships he faced after being diagnosed with level-4 visual impairment.
Song Seung-hwan will appear on MBN’s “Kim Joo-ha’s Day & Night,” airing at 9:40 p.m. on the 10th, where he will share various stories about his life and work. During the show, Song reveals that after serving as executive creative director for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics, he was diagnosed with level-4 visual impairment.
Song recalls that his eyesight deteriorated rapidly over the six months following the 2018 Winter Olympics. He visited several hospitals in Korea and even traveled to the United States of America (U.S.) for treatment, but was told, “You may lose your sight completely within six months,” and that “there is no cure.”
“After I was diagnosed with level-4 visual impairment, there was just one time when I cried my eyes out all night,” he confides, explaining that he can now only make out the outlines of objects. Even so, he says he tried to shake off the sudden despair and look for what he could still do to the fullest. Maintaining a positive outlook, he adds, “There are actually a lot of good things about your eyesight getting worse. You don’t have to see things you’d rather not see.”
Song Seung-hwan debuted in 1965 as a child voice actor and has since built a career as an actor and theater producer. He planned and produced the non-verbal performance “Nanta,” and served as executive creative director for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics. He is currently appearing in the play “The Dresser” alongside Park Geun-hyung, Jung Dong-hwan and Oh Man-seok.
