Hybe announced on the 9th that it has appointed former Motown Records chair Ethiopia Habtemariam as head of the music division at HYBE America.
As head of music, Habtemariam will oversee A&R and artist development across HYBE America’s labels and lead the company’s mid- to long-term growth strategy. She will seek new business opportunities at the intersection of music, culture and fandom, while also focusing on strengthening the status and influence of HYBE America’s hip-hop label QC Media Holdings.
Habtemariam is a veteran music-industry executive who spent nearly 20 years at Universal Music Group (UMG). As chair and CEO of Motown Records, she spearheaded the label’s revival and growth and helped enhance the global competitiveness of its artists and the label itself. Since the 1960s, Motown Records has ushered in a golden era of soul and R&B, launching legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and Marvin Gaye.
During her tenure at Motown, Habtemariam led collaborations between Motown and QC, helping expand the global footprint of artists including Lil Yachty, City Girls, Migos and Lil Baby.
Before joining Motown, Habtemariam held executive roles at Universal Music Publishing Group and Capitol Music Group under UMG. At Universal Music Publishing Group, she played a central role in signing and supporting the growth of top-tier artists such as Chris Brown, J. Cole, Justin Bieber and Ciara.
Isaac Lee, chair and CEO of HYBE America, stated, “Habtemariam is a leader with a singular influence across the music and broader cultural industries,” adding, “Her vision and insight will be critical in driving the next phase of growth for HYBE America as a future-oriented entertainment company that puts artists and fans at its core.”
Habtemariam said, “I have long resonated with the way HYBE America views the future of artists, fans and entertainment,” and continued, “It is deeply meaningful to be able to bring my experience to the next chapter of HYBE America, which is pursuing long-term growth grounded in cultural connection.”
Pierre “P” Thomas, CEO of QC Media Holdings, remarked, “Habtemariam and I have worked together for many years, taking on new challenges across the music industry. I am excited about the next chapter we will build together, grounded in her passion for artists, respect for culture and deep understanding of the music business.”
