According to The Financial News, President Lee Jae-myung will preside over a national briefing on the “2026 Economic Growth Strategy” at Cheong Wa Dae on the 9th.
The briefing will be broadcast live from 2 p.m. It has been arranged to present to the public a comprehensive, pan-government economic growth strategy aimed at achieving a major economic leap forward, in line with the goal of making this year a starting point for a great leap in politics, the economy, society, culture, diplomacy and security.
From the government side, 23 senior officials, including the Prime Minister of South Korea and ministers from the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), the United States Department of Education (ED), the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTI), will attend. From the private sector, participants will include business leaders in K-Food, beauty and regional tourism, representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises, mid-sized companies and small business owners, youth employment officials, the head of an economic organization, and the chair of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRC). Also attending will be members of government committees such as the vice chair of the National Economic Advisory Council and the chair of the Presidential Committee for the Era of Local Autonomy, as well as the Chief of Staff to the President of the Republic of Korea, the Chief Presidential Secretary for Policy and the Senior Presidential Secretary for Economic Growth, bringing the total number of participants to 56.
After the national anthem and opening remarks by President Lee, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy will present the joint government 2026 Economic Growth Strategy. This will be followed by in-depth discussions among participants, divided into two sessions, on key tasks for this year’s major economic leap: restoring the potential growth rate, achieving balanced growth for the people and overcoming polarization.
The main framework of the 2026 Economic Growth Strategy was publicly debated at a Cabinet meeting chaired by the president on November 11 last year. Since then, the government has continuously refined the detailed tasks through ministry and public institution briefings and related ministers’ meetings. The strategy will be finalized and announced at today’s national briefing.
In particular, it encompasses four major areas—proactive macroeconomic management, a rebound in the potential growth rate, balanced growth for the people and overcoming polarization, and strengthening the foundation for a great leap—along with 15 key tasks and 50 detailed implementation tasks. The government’s assessment of current economic conditions and its outlook for indicators such as economic growth and consumer price inflation will also be presented.
