[The Financial News] A controversy has erupted at Seoul National University (SNU) after all students in a course received F grades because the instructor failed to submit grades by the deadline.
According to Yonhap News Agency and other sources on the 7th, an instructor in the College of Social Sciences at SNU did not enter grades for a major course offered in the second semester of last year by the required deadline.
The grade submission deadline was April 26, but on April 25, the instructor notified students that changes in overseas travel plans would delay grade entry until May 2. However, on May 2, the instructor announced again that it would be difficult to meet the deadline due to the flu.
According to SNU's academic regulations, if the grade field is left blank or marked as Incomplete grade (I), students automatically receive an F grade or Unsatisfactory (U) grade. As a result, all 59 students in the course received F grades.
The issue was compounded by the fact that, during the delay, the instructor continued to post regularly on their personal blog and social media. Students expressed frustration, and on the anonymous student community Everytime, one student wrote, "Taking this course was mentally exhausting until the very end. I hope some action is taken, at least for the sake of future students."
As the controversy grew, the instructor reportedly sent an email to students the previous day, offering a sincere apology and stating that grades would be released on the afternoon of the 8th or around noon on the 9th.
