[Financial News] The National Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination against the Disabled announced that it will suspend its subway rush hour boarding protests until the upcoming local elections in June. This decision follows a proposal from Kim Young-bae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) who has declared his candidacy for Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor.
Park Gyeong-seok, standing representative of the National Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination against the Disabled, made this announcement at a press conference on the platform of Seoul Subway Line 4's Hyehwa Station on the morning of the 7th.
Park stated, "Yesterday, Representative Kim Young-bae visited the site with a sense of responsibility as a politician regarding the issues raised by the National Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination against the Disabled. He proposed that, until the local elections, we refrain from causing subway delays during rush hour to avoid inconvenience to citizens." Park added, "We discussed Representative Kim's proposal and decided to accept it in good faith."
Park further explained, "Representative Kim Young-bae has promised to hold a meeting with the Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor candidates from the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) at 10 a.m. on the 9th at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea. We will explain the issues we raised in the subway and the responsibilities that come with being Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor, and propose a policy agreement."
Kim Young-bae, who has announced his candidacy for Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor, visited the National Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination against the Disabled's campaign site the previous day and requested both the suspension of the boarding protest and a meeting with the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) Seoul mayoral candidates.
The National Solidarity for the Elimination of Discrimination against the Disabled stated that if their policy agreement and demands are not met, they will resume subway boarding protests after the local elections. Park Gyeong-seok remarked, "I do not believe the Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor candidates will refuse to guarantee the legitimate rights of persons with disabilities. However, if promises are not kept, we will resume subway actions after the local elections."
