[Financial News] The police have launched a compulsory investigation into allegations that the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) sought to secure additional detention space in correctional facilities during the December 3 Martial Law contingency.
The Special Investigation Headquarters for the Three Major Special Counsel Transfer Cases of the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) announced that, starting at around 10 a.m. on the 6th, investigators were conducting a search and seizure at the office of the Special Counsel for Insurrection in the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office to secure materials related to former MOJ Corrections Chief Shin Yong-hae’s alleged involvement in key insurrection duties.
This search and seizure is reportedly the first compulsory investigation by the Special Investigation Headquarters into the remaining cases of the Special Counsel.
Previously, the Special Counsel for Insurrection determined that, during the period of martial law, former Chief Shin Yong-hae, acting on the orders of former Minister of Justice Park Sung-jae, checked the detention capacity of correctional facilities in the Seoul metropolitan area. At that time, Shin reportedly informed Park that approximately 3,600 people could be accommodated.
The Special Counsel subsequently indicted former Minister Park Sung-jae on charges including key insurrection duties, and the case involving former Chief Shin Yong-hae was transferred to the police after the Special Counsel concluded its investigation.
On the 17th of last month, the police Special Investigation Headquarters received 33 cases from the Special Counsel for Insurrection, including the 'immediate appeal waiver' case of former Prosecutor General Sim Woo-jung, the incitement to insurrection cases involving Ahn Chang-ho, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, and Korean history lecturer Jeon Han-gil, as well as suspicions that former Chief Presidential Secretary Chung Jin-suk ordered the destruction of presidential office PCs. Of these, 20 cases were transferred to the Ministry of National Defense Special Investigation Headquarters, and the remaining 13 are under police investigation.
