[Financial News] Police have launched a full-scale investigation into allegations of a '100 million won nomination fund' involving Rep. Kang Sun-woo.
On the 6th, the Public Investigation Unit of the Metropolitan Investigation Unit at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) announced that from around 7 a.m. that day, they were questioning Mr. A, a former staff member of Rep. Kang's office, as a suspect.
Mr. A is suspected of having received and kept 100 million won from the camp of Kim Kyung, then a Seoul Metropolitan Council member, ahead of the 2022 local elections as a nomination fund.
According to a previously released recording, on April 21, 2022, Rep. Kim Byung-kee asked Kang Sun-woo during a conversation, "Wasn't it the case that an associate kept the 100 million won that was received?" Kang reportedly replied, "That's correct."
Rep. Kang later explained, "I instructed Mr. A several times to return the money and confirmed that it was returned," but Mr. A has stated that he was never instructed to return the money and is unaware of any such return.
The police plan to use the suspect's testimony to clarify the nature of the funds, the circumstances of their transfer and storage, and whether they were actually returned.
Meanwhile, police also plan to summon Kim Tae-woo, former head of Gangseo District Office, Seoul, later in the afternoon for questioning on charges of obstruction of business filed against Rep. Kim Byung-kee.
