[The Financial News] The story has emerged of a man in his 40s who wishes to divorce his wife because she follows male idol group members everywhere, neglecting even their 10-year-old daughter's school commute.
According to YTN Radio's 'Attorney Jo In-seop's Counseling Center' on the 5th, Mr. A's wife became deeply involved in fan activities for a male idol who appeared on a TV survival program two years ago.
Mr. A explained, "At first, I thought it was just a way for her to relieve parenting stress, but the situation grew more serious over time." He continued, "She neglected our daughter's school commute to follow the idol, and there were several occasions when our daughter had to wait alone at a convenience store after getting off the academy shuttle because her mother didn't pick her up."
He added, "My wife doesn't even prepare meals for our daughter. The house is filled with delivery food trash and idol merchandise boxes, leaving no space to walk. I tried comforting her, getting angry, and using various methods, but nothing improved the situation."
Recently, Mr. A discovered a loan notice for an overdraft account hidden deep in their bedroom wardrobe. His wife had secretly used his seal to take out a loan.
When Mr. A asked about the purpose, his wife confessed, "I used the loan to put up a birthday advertisement for the idol at Gangnam Station and bought 500 copies of the same album to win a spot at a fan signing event." Upon checking, Mr. A found that their loans and credit card debt exceeded 80 million won.
However, instead of apologizing, his wife shouted, "What have you ever done for me? Thanks to this singer, I overcame depression and found the will to live." She continued, "We can always earn more money, but if our idol's ranking drops, will you take responsibility?" displaying a brazen attitude.
Mr. A said, "I've completely lost affection for my wife. I want to end this marriage and gain custody of my child, but my wife refuses to agree to a divorce."
He lamented, "I don't know if divorce is possible or what to do about the loans she took out without my knowledge. I feel hopeless."
Jinhee Shin, an attorney at Shinsegae-ro Law Firm who heard the story, stated, "This goes beyond a simple hobby—neglecting a child and destroying the family's financial foundation constitutes a 'serious reason making it difficult to continue the marriage.'"
Regarding the 80 million won loan the wife took out without Mr. A's knowledge, she advised, "Debt incurred for purposes unrelated to the couple's joint life is considered personal debt and may be excluded from property division. However, I recommend asserting the wife's fault more strongly during the division process."
She added, "Since the wife secretly used his seal to incur debt, Mr. A may also claim damages, and criminally, she could be charged with Forgery of Private Documents."
