[The Financial News] A woman from the Republic of the Philippines who married an American man has denied allegations that she married for money or a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card), insisting, "We married for love." Their story has attracted significant attention online.
According to The Sun on the 31st of last month (local time), Lyn, a 24-year-old woman from the Republic of the Philippines, met Brett, a 25-year-old American, through an online dating application.
Lyn, who first received a message from Brett while he was working as an engineer, recalled her first impression of him as "cute."
After talking online for a long time, the two became a couple. Despite never meeting in person during their long-distance relationship, they finally met for the first time about two years later when Lyn visited Massachusetts in the U.S.
Brett later proposed to Lyn, whose unwavering sincerity won her over. After accepting his proposal, Lyn moved to the U.S. and the couple held their wedding.
The couple created a joint social media account to share their journey from dating to married life with the public.
Lyn has lived in the U.S. for about five months now. She is still searching for a job, while Brett is the sole breadwinner. Lyn is reportedly responsible for all household chores.
As their story spread, some accused the couple of marrying for financial gain, claiming Lyn wed Brett to obtain a Green Card or that the marriage was for immigration purposes.
A Green Card refers to the U.S. Permanent Resident Card, which allows foreigners to legally reside and work in the country long-term. It is distinct from citizenship.
Amid a flood of malicious comments, Lyn responded, "People say I married an overweight American man just for money or to get a Green Card, but that is absolutely not true."
She added, "Like any other ordinary couple, we love each other and are building a life together."
Brett also stated, "If Lyn had married for money, she would have chosen someone much wealthier than me. I am not in a financially comfortable situation." He continued, "My wife enjoys cooking and is a devoted, ordinary woman who actively participates in household chores."
Lyn shared that her husband has faced not only body-shaming comments but also accusations of having a mental disability.
Brett remarked, "The only time I feel real emotional pain is when I read those comments."
Nevertheless, the couple announced that they have no plans to stop sharing their lives online.
Brett said, "We will continue to cherish and support each other for the rest of our lives."
Lyn emphasized, "Our first meeting and relationship may look different from others, but what matters is that we truly love each other."
