On the afternoon of the 2nd, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) closed at 4,309.63, up 95.46 points (2.27%) from the previous session’s 4,214.17. The index was displayed on the electronic board at the Hana Bank dealing room in Jung-gu, Seoul. [Financial News] On the first trading day of the new year, January 2, KOSPI broke through the 4,300 mark for the first time in history, driven by strong foreign buying.
On this day, KOSPI ended at 4,309.63, up 95.46 points (2.27%) from the previous session.
KOSPI opened at 4,224.53, up 10.36 points (0.25%) from the previous day, and continued its upward momentum to reach new highs.
Just two minutes after the market opened, at around 10:02 a.m., KOSPI surpassed the 4,240 mark for the first time ever, breaking its previous record high of 4,226.75.
In the afternoon, KOSPI continued to set new records, touching an intraday high of 4,313.55.
In the domestic stock market, individuals and institutions sold 454.3 billion won and 233.5 billion won worth of shares, respectively, while foreigners purchased 644.6 billion won.
Among the top 14 stocks by market capitalization, Celltrion (11.88%), Samsung Electronics (7.17%), SK Square (6.52%), and SK Hynix (3.99%) posted the largest gains. In contrast, Samsung C&T (-2.04%), KB Financial Group (-1.12%), and Kia (-0.99%) recorded the biggest declines.
The KOSDAQ index closed at 945.57, up 20.10 points (2.17%) from the previous session. The index opened at 930.35, up 4.88 points (0.53%). In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the US Dollar–South Korean Won exchange rate ended at 1,441.8 won, up 2.8 won from the previous session’s weekly closing price of 1,439 won.
