[Financial News] The fashion platform MUSINSA has attracted attention by announcing that it will provide members with a coupon pack worth 50,000 won unconditionally to celebrate the New Year. The amount, conditions, and even the colors of the coupons have drawn comparisons to Coupang’s '50,000 won compensation' offered in response to a large-scale personal information leak.
According to the industry on the 1st, MUSINSA announced through its official website and application that both existing and new members will receive an instant discount coupon pack worth 50,000 won, as well as a 5,000 won Musinsa Money payback (refund).
The 50,000 won coupon pack consists of four types: a 20,000 won coupon for use at MUSINSA Store, another 20,000 won coupon for the outdoor apparel and footwear category 'Musinsa Shoes & Player,' a 5,000 won coupon for the cosmetics category 'MUSINSA BEAUTY,' and a 5,000 won coupon for the secondhand clothing category 'MUSINSA USED.'
The coupons can be used for two weeks from the 1st to the 14th on eligible products in each category, with minimum purchase prices set for each category.
New members can receive an additional 50,000 won coupon pack along with a 'Welcome' 20% discount coupon. If they charge Musinsa Money and make a purchase of at least 10,000 won, they will also receive a 5,000 won refund.
Following MUSINSA's announcement, Coupang’s '50,000 won coupon'—offered as compensation for a personal data breach—has resurfaced in public discussion.
Coupang's compensation plan, announced on the 29th of last month, offers a 50,000 won shopping voucher per person starting from the 15th. The compensation targets 33.7 million customer accounts that received data breach notifications.
However, the voucher is divided into four discount coupons: 5,000 won for all Coupang products, 5,000 won for the delivery platform Coupang Eats, 20,000 won for the travel platform Coupang Travel, and 20,000 won for the luxury beauty and fashion platform R.LUX. This 'splitting' has sparked controversy.
Immediately after the announcement, affected customers pointed out that only 10,000 won worth of coupons were realistically usable. To use the 20,000 won coupons for Coupang Travel or R.LUX, customers would need to spend hundreds of thousands of won on travel services or luxury goods. Critics argue that the coupons are being used as bait to encourage high spending, and that the company is using the opportunity to promote lesser-known platforms.
Some observers have also interpreted the colors of MUSINSA's coupons as a direct jab at Coupang’s policy. The four coupon pack colors—red, light orange, light green, and teal—are said to resemble some of the letters in the Coupang logo.
