[Financial News] A Chinese national who entered Jeju Island under the Visa-Free Entry System was arrested by police for pickpocketing tourists.
According to News1 on the 30th, a Chinese man in his 30s, identified as A, has been detained and is under police investigation on charges of theft and violating the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act.
A entered Jeju Island on the 22nd through the Visa-Free Entry System. Starting the next day, on the 23rd, he allegedly stole mobile phones and wallets from tourists and others in the Dongmun Traditional Market area.
Police investigations revealed that A used stolen credit cards to make overseas purchases worth several million won. Authorities also discovered that he had conspired with an overseas broker he met through a Social Networking Service (SNS), agreeing to share the proceeds of the crimes in an organized manner.
A continued his crimes even during the Christmas period, but was caught in the act by police who responded to a tourist's report at Dongmun Traditional Market on the 26th. So far, nine victims have been identified.
Police plan to investigate whether there are additional victims or accomplices before referring A to the prosecution for indictment.
