[The Financial News] France has taken a hard stance against speeding on its roads. From now on, exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h will be treated as a criminal offense.
On the 29th (local time), the Ministry of the Interior of France announced that it would issue a new decree in accordance with laws enacted in July to address road homicide and curb road violence.
Previously, speeding was subject to fines and only considered a crime in cases of repeat offenses. However, under the new decree, anyone caught driving more than 50 km/h over the speed limit will face up to three months in prison, a fine of up to 3,750 euros (approximately 6.3 million won), and a criminal record.
The Ministry of the Interior of France warned that accidents caused by exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h can result in severe consequences. Officials explained that such speeding reduces drivers’ reaction times, increases braking distances, and leads to greater impact in the event of a collision.
Deputy Minister Marie-Pierre Bédérène stated, "Exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h is not a simple violation. It is a deliberate act that endangers lives," adding, "By classifying such extreme speeding as a crime and strengthening judicial responses, we are sending a clear message that road violence will no longer be tolerated."
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior of France reported that there were 63,217 cases of speeding violations exceeding the limit by more than 50 km/h last year, marking a 69% increase compared to 2017.
