[Financial News] Investigative authorities have launched a compulsory investigation into POSCO E&C, the main contractor for the Sinansan Line construction at Yeouido Station in Seoul, and its subcontractors after a fatal rebar collapse.
The Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 30th that, together with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) and the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office, it began a search and seizure operation from 9 a.m. targeting POSCO E&C and its subcontractors in connection with the fatal accident that occurred during double-track railway construction at Yeouido Station on the 18th.
The search locations included five sites such as POSCO E&C's headquarters, site offices, and the construction site itself.
Previously, on the 18th, a rebar structure collapsed at a depth of 70 meters underground at the Sinansan Line construction site at Yeouido Station in Seoul.
As a result of the accident, a man in his 50s who was driving a concrete mixer truck was transported to the hospital in cardiac arrest but ultimately passed away. It was reported that he was an employee of a POSCO E&C partner company.
Prosecutors, police, and the labor office established a joint investigation system immediately after the incident, considering the repeated occurrence of serious accidents at the site. On the 22nd, a joint investigative meeting was held to discuss legal interpretations and investigative directions, focusing on potential violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
A prosecution official stated, "We will thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident and those responsible, respond strictly, and do our utmost to prevent the recurrence of serious accidents and protect the lives and safety of workers."
