[The Financial News] There are significant differences in how men and women interpret signs of interest when dating with the intention of remarriage.
Only U, a matchmaking agency specializing in remarriage, together with Bienarae, released the results of a survey conducted on 538 divorced men and women (269 men and 269 women) on the 29th.
When asked, 'Under what circumstances is a kiss acceptable in a remarriage relationship?' 32.7% of men responded, 'If I don't dislike it,' while 34.2% of women answered, 'When I feel trust.'
For men, the next most common responses were 'When I feel trust' (29.0%) and 'When I intend to remarry' (22.3%). For women, the order was 'When I intend to remarry' (30.8%) and 'If I don't dislike it' (21.6%). The fourth most common answer was 'If the other person wants it' (men 16.0%, women 13.4%).
A representative from Only U explained, “It is common for relationships to end due to disagreements over physical affection in remarriage dating. This is because men tend to rush physical intimacy more than the generally conservative women.”
Opinions also differed on signals of interest. Among men, 28.6% chose 'linking arms' as the strongest sign of affection. In contrast, 30.1% of women selected 'sharing a straw.'
For men, after 'linking arms,' the next most common signals were 'sharing a straw' (25.6%), 'going to karaoke together' (20.1%), and 'accepting a home invitation' (18.6%).
For women, the order was 'linking arms' (25.3%), 'accepting a home invitation' (20.8%), and 'going to karaoke together' (17.1%).
Dong-Gyu Son, CEO of Only U, explained, “Since women tend to take a more passive approach in remarriage dating, when a woman initiates linking arms, men may interpret it as a very proactive sign of interest.”
He added, “Women place a high value on empathy and a sense of unity, so sharing food or drinks is difficult unless there is a foundation of trust.”
In response to the follow-up question, 'What does it mean when a woman links arms with a man in a remarriage relationship?' 31.2% of male respondents said it means 'an official couple,' while 33.1% of women answered 'a sign of interest.'
Lee Kyung, general manager at Bienarae, analyzed, “Not only in remarriage but also in general dating, men often take the lead. Even if a woman links arms without much thought, men tend to interpret it as a positive response to their lead, or as a signal of relationship progress.”
