According to Financial News, a shopping center in China, struggling with restroom smoking, has drawn attention by installing glass partitions in restroom stalls that become clear when cigarette smoke is detected.
On the 25th (local time), the South China Morning Post (SCMP) and other outlets reported that the Shuibei International Center and Shubei Pearl Building Shopping Center in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, recently remodeled their restrooms.
During the renovation, special glass was installed on restroom doors. Normally, the glass remains frosted, but when smoke is detected, the power is cut off after a few seconds, causing the glass to turn transparent and exposing the inside.
The shopping center also posted a notice: 'If you smoke, the glass will become transparent. If you don't want to become famous online, please refrain from smoking.'
This measure quickly went viral on Social Networking Service (SNS).
One local social media user welcomed the move, saying, 'Finally, an effective way to address indoor smoking.' However, some expressed concerns about the possibility of the frosted window malfunctioning.
In response, the shopping center explained, 'To prevent privacy violations, the smoke detector is set to respond only to smoke,' and added, 'A reset button will be installed near the glass in case the sensor is triggered by mistake.'
Meanwhile, Shenzhen is one of the cities that strictly prohibits indoor smoking in public places. Although the shopping center is a non-smoking building, restroom smoking has persisted, prompting these extraordinary measures.
