[Financial News] Kim Yong-hyun, former Minister of National Defense (MND), and Yeo In-hyung, former Commander of the Defense Counterintelligence Command (DCC), who were brought to trial on charges of deploying drones to Pyongyang to create grounds for martial law, have failed to avoid additional detention.
On the 24th, the Criminal Agreement Division 36 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Jeong-yeop) issued additional detention warrants for Kim, the former minister, and Yeo, the former commander, who were indicted and detained on charges of aiding the enemy and abuse of authority. The court stated that there are concerns about the destruction of evidence.
Kim and Yeo, who were detained in December last year and January this year respectively, sought another chance for release but were unsuccessful. Kim's original detention was set to expire on the 25th, but with the new warrant, he will remain in custody until June 24 next year. Yeo's detention period, initially set to end on January 2, has now been extended to July 1 next year.
The two are accused of repeatedly sending drones to Pyongyang from around October last year to provoke incidents and create justification for former President Yoon Suk Yeol to declare martial law.
The Special Prosecutor's Office for Insurrection, which brought them to trial, determined that the charge of aiding the enemy applies, as the drone crashed near Pyongyang, exposing the operation and military capabilities.
A hearing for an additional detention warrant for former President Yoon was also held on the 23rd. However, since Yoon's current detention period runs until January 18 next year, the court is expected to make its decision after the new year.
