Police investigating allegations of politicians receiving funds from the Unification Church have summoned a key figure who managed the church’s finances.
The National Office of Investigation’s special task force at the KNPA called in Mr. Cho, the former General Affairs Director of the Unification Church World Headquarters, as a reference witness for questioning at 9 a.m. on the 23rd.
Upon arriving at the police station, Mr. Cho told reporters, “My priority is to cooperate faithfully with the police investigation.” When asked if he had ever processed expenses related to politicians, he replied, “To my knowledge, I have no recollection of that,” and added, “I will answer whatever questions are asked during today’s investigation.”
The police are expected to question Mr. Cho about how funds allegedly used for political lobbying by the Unification Church were raised and spent, and whether President Hak Ja Han was involved in any way.
While serving as General Affairs Director, Mr. Cho supervised Mr. Lee, then Director of Finance, and managed the disbursement of funds. Mr. Lee is the wife of Yoon Young-ho, the former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters and a central figure in the lobbying allegations. Police reportedly questioned Mr. Lee the previous day.
Mr. Lee is currently on trial for allegedly withdrawing church funds in cash without proper accounting and for directly purchasing a Graff necklace that former Director Yoon gave to Kim Keon Hee.
As of the previous day, a total of nine individuals had been questioned by police in connection with the Unification Church fund allegations.
On the 24th, police plan to question President Han and former Director Yoon, who are being held at the Seoul Detention Center. Previously, on the 17th, police interviewed President Han for about three hours.
