[Financial News] The original musical 'Granny Poetry Club' has been nominated in the most categories at the 10th Korea Musical Awards.
On the 22nd, the Korea Musical Association announced the nominees for the 10th Korea Musical Awards. Launched in 2016, the Korea Musical Awards is a leading domestic musical awards ceremony hosted by the Korea Musical Association and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and Arts Council Korea (ARKO).
Marking its 10th anniversary this year, the awards saw a record number of over 100 preliminary entries, resulting in the highest competition rate to date. Musicals that premiered and were performed for paying audiences in Korea between December 2, 2024, and December 7, 2025, were eligible. After a preliminary vote, nominees were selected, and the final winners will be announced on the day of the ceremony following the main vote.
'Granny Poetry Club' received nominations in eight categories, making it the most nominated work. It was shortlisted for Best Production (under 400 seats), Best Supporting Actor (Jungwoo Kang), Best Producer (Byungwon Kang), Best Director (Kyungtaek Oh), Best Book (Hajin Kim), Best Score (Hyesung Kim), and Best Stage Art (the late Sangyeon Park, video designer), as well as the Grand Prize for the best original musical of the year.
The musical 'Granny Poetry Club' is based on the true story of grandmothers from Chilgok who, in their eighties, learned to read and write poetry, rediscovering excitement in their lives. The show is adapted from the popular documentary film 'Granny Poetry Club' and the essay 'Aging with Joy.' More than 20 poems written by the real grandmother students have been transformed into musical numbers, delivering a warm and moving experience.
Selected as the '2024 Performing Arts Creation Support Project's New Work of the Year,' the musical premiered at the Haneul Theater, National Theater of Korea in 2025. Thanks to enthusiastic audience support, it is set to return to the same venue from May 15 to June 28, 2026.
Meanwhile, 'Granny Poetry Club' will also make its overseas debut as a showcase selection for the '2025 K-Musical Roadshow in Tokyo.' The K-Musical Roadshow in Tokyo is an international showcase event hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) and organized by the Korea Arts Management Service (KAMS), featuring five original Korean musicals introduced to Japanese audiences.
The event, held at Hulic Hall Tokyo on November 12, drew a total of 668 local audience members and industry professionals.
The 10th Korea Musical Awards ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. on January 19 next year at the Grand Theater, Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Jung-gu, Seoul.
