[Financial News] The story of a young Chinese man in his twenties who saved 1.12 million yuan (about 235 million won) over five years working as a food delivery worker has become a hot topic.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 18th, Zhang Xuechang, 25, moved to Shanghai in 2020 to work as a delivery worker for a major platform company.
Previously, Zhang Xuechang had to close a breakfast restaurant he co-owned with a friend in his hometown of Zhengzhou, Fujian Province, leaving him with a debt of 50,000 yuan (about 10.5 million won).
At the end of last month, Zhang Xuechang posted a video on social media, sharing that he earned a total of 1.4 million yuan from delivery work over the past five years. After repaying his debts and covering living expenses, he managed to save 1.12 million yuan.
He emphasized that, aside from basic necessities, he had no other expenditures.
He also added, "I work about 13 hours a day, seven days a week, and except for eating and sleeping, I spend all my time delivering food."
Zhang Xuechang's working hours run from 10:40 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. the next day. However, he reportedly ensures he gets eight and a half hours of sleep each day to maintain his stamina.
He explained, "I handle more than 300 orders a month, with each order taking an average of 25 minutes," adding, "The total distance I have covered so far amounts to 324,000 kilometers."
Yan, the head of the delivery center in Minhang District, Shanghai, where Zhang Xuechang works, testified, "He is not talkative and devotes himself solely to food delivery. I've never seen him walk—he is always running."
Yan also remarked, "In our industry, the harder you work, the more you can earn. Zhang Xuechang is a rare example of someone who works extremely hard and is also very frugal."
Zhang Xuechang announced that he plans to invest 800,000 yuan next year to open two breakfast specialty restaurants in Shanghai.
Local internet users who came across his story commented, "Truly impressive," and "He sets a great example for young people."
On the other hand, some expressed concern, saying, "Don't try to emulate him. He's risking his life to make money."
