[The Financial News] Actor Kim Eui-sung, who has consistently voiced his opinions on social issues, has now confirmed his withdrawal from Coupang. Recently, Coupang has come under fire for its inadequate response and inappropriate attitude from management following a massive data breach affecting 37.7 million users.
On the 18th, Kim Eui-sung posted a brief message on his social networking service (SNS) account, starting with, "These days, I use Naver Shopping."
He wrote, "There are a few inconveniences, but it's usable. Life goes on even without early morning delivery," adding, "If the company I left shows signs of coming to its senses, I might consider rejoining."
His post did not specify the company or provide further details, but references to 'early morning delivery' clearly pointed to Coupang.
In particular, the phrase "come to their senses" suggests that his decision to leave was more influenced by the attitude of Coupang's executives, such as Chairman Bom Kim, than by the data breach itself.
After announcing the data breach on the 29th of last month, Coupang sparked public outrage by using language in its apology and text messages that appeared to evade responsibility. The company also failed to demonstrate accountability or offer remedies or compensation to affected users.
At a hearing on the massive data breach held by the Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee of the National Assembly on the 17th, this attitude was on full display. Chairman Bom Kim, as well as former CEO Park Dae-jun, who recently resigned citing the incident, were both absent.
Instead, only recently appointed CEO Harold Rogers and CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) Brett Mathis, both foreign executives, attended the hearing. Throughout the session, they repeatedly stated, "We do not speak Korean," and gave evasive answers.
After witnessing Coupang's response, many consumers decided to leave the platform—a movement known as 'leaving Coupang'—and Kim Eui-sung joined this trend.

Kim Eui-sung has previously spoken out on social issues. In 2016, after the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye was passed, he posted "I'm happy" on Twitter. Last December, following the second impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol, he wrote "Democracy tastes good" on his SNS.
