According to The Financial News, at an exhibition in China, a child dropped and damaged a pure gold crown worth hundreds of millions of won.
On the 18th (local time), foreign media outlets such as Metro and Daily Mail reported that a young visitor recently touched and knocked over a gold crown weighing about 2kg that was on display at the X Museum in Beijing.
Video footage shows a child, accompanied by his mother, fiddling with a glass display case. The boy then gently pushed the glass cover protecting the crown, causing the crown to fall to the floor and shatter into pieces.
The child, startled, stepped back, while two adults believed to be his parents stood frozen in shock, covering their mouths.
The gold crown was designed and crafted by the husband of Zhang Kaiyi, a well-known beauty influencer in China, as a wedding gift. It was made with 2kg of pure gold and is valued at £240,000 (approximately 473 million won, or $370,000).
The exhibition was organized by Zhang Kaiyi and her husband, and no admission fee was charged.
Zhang Kaiyi expressed her distress, saying, “The crown holds very special meaning for me, and I am deeply upset that it was damaged during the exhibition. Its value cannot be measured by its gold weight alone.”
She added, however, “This was clearly an accident, and there was no intent or malice on the part of the child.”
A spokesperson for the museum acknowledged shortcomings in management, stating, “Despite the high value of the piece, the display stand was not securely fixed.”
Legal experts also pointed out, “Given the nature and high value of the artwork, the museum should have implemented a safer and more protective display system.”
Industry experts estimate that repairs to the crown will cost around 62 million won (approximately $46,000). The gold crown is reportedly undergoing insurance processing.
