[Financial News] The world-renowned flight tracking application has sparked controversy for labeling Dokdo with the Japanese name 'Takeshima.'
On the 18th, Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University pointed out that when using Flightradar24, the world’s most widely used flight tracking app, Dokdo is displayed as 'Dokdo' if accessed from Korea. However, if accessed from Japan with the language set to Korean, it appears as 'Takeshima,' and with the language set to Japanese, it is shown as '竹島 (Takeshima)'.
Flightradar24 is a global flight tracking app developed by a Swedish company, providing real-time flight information worldwide.
Professor Seo sent a protest email to Flightradar24, emphasizing that Dokdo is clearly Korean territory from historical, geographical, and international legal perspectives. He also attached an English-language video about Dokdo and urged the company to correct the labeling as soon as possible.
A similar controversy recently arose when Instagram launched a location-sharing map service, allowing users to share their locations.
When using Instagram’s map service in Korea, the territory is labeled as 'DOKDO,' but in Japan, it is marked as 'TAKESHIMA.'
Google Maps also displays the territory as 'Dokdo' when accessed from Korea, but in Japan, it is labeled as '竹島 (Takeshima),' reflecting the Japanese claim.
Professor Seo noted, 'There is a growing trend among global portals, social networking services, and map apps to display the name 'Takeshima' when accessed from Japan.'
He further emphasized, 'We must continue our efforts and strengthen global outreach to correct these erroneous labels regarding Dokdo.'
