In Japanese, the camellia flower is written as '椿' and pronounced 'Tsubaki.' Symbolizing elegance, dignity, and resilience, the camellia is often used as a name for people and brands. There is even a hotel in Guam, a year-round resort destination in the North Pacific popular among Koreans, that bears this name: The Tsubaki Tower, an ultra-luxury hotel perched atop Gun Beach Cliff in Tumon Bay.
A member of Ken Hotels & Resorts Holdings Ltd., The Tsubaki Tower is a sister hotel to Pacific Islands Club Guam (PIC Guam), one of Guam’s top family entertainment resorts. Its greatest strength is that all 340 rooms offer sweeping ocean views of the blue Pacific. On the 14th, we met with Ken Yanagisawa, the hotel’s General Manager and CEO of Ken Hotels & Resorts Holdings Ltd. (age 54, pictured), and asked him to name three key strengths of The Tsubaki Tower. He gave the same answer for each.
Every room at The Tsubaki Tower comes with a spacious balcony of at least 13 square meters, providing guests with an even more relaxing stay. Yanagisawa recommends, "If you stay at The Tsubaki Tower, be sure to have breakfast on your balcony." He added, "While the hotel boasts two restaurants, including Casa Oceano, three bars, and two cafes, the 'balcony breakfast' with a view of the blue ocean will be an unforgettable memory."
The ocean-view infinity pool, open daily until 11 p.m., and the nighttime fountain show held there are also major attractions at The Tsubaki Tower. Located on the ground floor, the infinity pool creates the illusion of merging with the sea, making guests feel as if they are embracing the blue North Pacific. The nighttime fountain show, held three times each evening (at 7:30 p.m., 9:00 p.m., and 10:30 p.m.), offers a taste of tropical romance and passion. In addition, guests at The Tsubaki Tower can enjoy complimentary access to the pool and waterslides at Hotel Nikko Guam, just a five-minute walk away, for even more aquatic fun.
Opened in 2020, The Tsubaki Tower features a sleek design and modern facilities inspired by refined Japanese minimalism. Its semi-circular exterior maximizes the panoramic sea views, while the lobby and public spaces, filled with natural light, create a bright and open atmosphere that has been well received by visitors. Unlike most other hotels in Guam, which were built before the 1990s, guest rooms at The Tsubaki Tower are generously sized, with even the standard Camellia Room offering more than 45 square meters of space, excluding the balcony.
Yanagisawa also introduced several projects being prepared for guests at The Tsubaki Tower. The nearest events are the countdown party and outdoor fireworks show on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Special year-end accommodation packages are currently available, which include late checkout at 3 p.m. the following day, dinner at Casa Oceano, live DJ entertainment, and participation in the countdown event.
To make it easier for guests to enjoy the ocean, the hotel is adding new stairs leading directly to the beach. In March next year, The Tsubaki Tower will designate 'Chamorro Month' and offer cultural experience programs to help guests immerse themselves in Guam’s rich heritage.
