[Financial News] LG Electronics Inc. announced on the 14th that it will partner with Seoul National University (SNU) to establish a specialized industry-academia research center aimed at advancing artificial intelligence (AI) security technologies.
Recently, LG Electronics Inc. signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at SNU in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, to establish the 'Secured AI Research Center.' The signing ceremony was attended by Byoung-Hoon Kim, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Electronics Inc., Juhan Kim, Vice President for Research at SNU, and other key officials.
Leveraging SNU’s world-class researchers and extensive infrastructure, LG Electronics Inc. will jointly undertake a variety of industry-academia projects ranging from securing core AI security technologies to implementing safe AI services. The newly established research center will focus on developing technologies for a safe AI ecosystem, such as security enhancements for Large Language Model (LLM) agents and data leakage prevention. Specifically, the center will establish a 'Machine Learning Security Operations (MLSecOps)' model, which applies security frameworks throughout the entire software development and operation process.
LLM agents, which understand and generate language and perform various tasks, are widely used in everyday life to provide convenience. However, they also pose increasing threats, such as generating false information or attempts to steal data from external sources. Since traditional DevOps and Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) approaches are insufficient for comprehensive responses to these threats, the goal is to implement a more security-focused framework.
The plan also includes developing an AI security platform that can be applied in real industrial environments, performing integrated functions such as intrusion detection and data protection throughout the entire process from data collection and training to deployment, operation, and disposal.
The inaugural director of the center will be Yongtaek Hong, Dean of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at SNU. From LG Electronics Inc., Lim Hyo-joon, head of the Next Generation Computing Lab under the CTO division, will oversee and coordinate research projects. The Next Generation Computing Lab is responsible for proactively securing future technologies such as next-generation security, blockchain, quantum computing, and distributed computing, and for creating innovative business value.
Byoung-Hoon Kim stated, “As AI technologies are increasingly used in various fields such as home appliances, mobility, and robotics, security and safety have become essential. We will enhance next-generation security technologies to establish leadership in the AI security domain and strive to provide safer and more reliable products and services to customers and society.”
