According to the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) National Office of Investigation on the 11th, the Major Crime Investigation Division has established a special investigation team of 23 members to probe allegations of Unification Church money transfers to political figures. Park Chang-hwan, head of the Major Crime Investigation Division and leader of the special team, returned to the KNPA from the Cho Eun-seok special prosecutor’s team on the same day.
On the afternoon of the same day, investigators from the special team visited the Seoul Detention Center to meet Young Ho Yun, the former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters, who is currently in custody. The team is expected to examine the credibility of the allegations by reviewing Yun’s statements during the special prosecutor’s investigation and in court.
Previously, in August, the special prosecutor’s team obtained testimony from Young Ho Yun, former head of the Unification Church World Headquarters, claiming that the Unification Church supported not only the People Power Party but also politicians from the DPK. The special prosecutor’s team did not investigate the matter directly, citing it as outside their jurisdiction, which led to controversy over alleged bias. The case was later assigned a preliminary investigation number and transferred to the National Office of Investigation the previous day.
The National Office of Investigation determined that a prompt investigation was necessary, considering issues such as the statute of limitations. As a result, a special team was formed within the Major Crime Investigation Division to begin the probe. The statute of limitations for violations of the Political Funds Act is seven years. For incidents involving funds received in 2018, the deadline for prosecution expires at the end of this year, which could make it difficult to hold those involved accountable.
The police plan to summon those implicated in the allegations for questioning soon. A police official stated, "Now that the investigation is underway, we are reviewing the transferred records and coordinating schedules to question those involved."
