Presiding Judge Junseo Heo of the Seoul Western District Court’s Criminal Division 11 opened the first hearing on the morning of the 11th for Nam, who was indicted for violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and speeding). Nam, who identified himself as an office worker, acknowledged all the charges in court.
According to prosecutors, on April 27 at around 4:10 a.m., Nam was accused of driving under the influence and crashing into a median barrier while overtaking another vehicle near Dongjak Bridge on Gangbyeonbuk-ro toward Ilsan. Although there were no casualties, his blood alcohol concentration was 0.122%, exceeding the license revocation threshold of 0.08%.
Prosecutors believe that Nam was driving at 182 km/h on a road with an 80 km/h speed limit at the time. His attorney stated, “We admit to all charges,” and agreed to most of the evidence, but objected to the admissibility of some parts of the suspect interrogation record due to missing signatures and seals.
Nam’s legal team said they would submit sentencing materials related to his previous drunk driving offense.
Meanwhile, Nam received a summary order to pay a 6 million won fine for drunk driving in July 2023, and in January last year, he was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years, for violating the Narcotics Control Act. Following the recent incident, police requested an arrest warrant, citing that Nam had committed another offense during his suspended sentence. However, the court dismissed the request, stating that there was insufficient reason for detention.
The court scheduled the next hearing for January 15 of next year.
