[Financial News] The Korea Consumer Agency (KCA) recently warned consumers to exercise caution, noting that manipulated videos using Deepfake technology are being used in online gambling advertisements.
KCA released the results of its monitoring of online gambling ads on Facebook conducted in August and September.

According to the monitoring, 38 cases of false advertising using unfair methods such as Deepfake were identified. By type, there were six cases where Deepfake technology was used to make it appear as if celebrities were endorsing the ads, and eight cases involving fabricated news broadcasts (with some overlap). There were also 24 cases of impersonating government or public institution certification and 13 cases of falsely claiming partnerships with well-known companies or organizations.
These ads manipulated videos to make it seem as though famous celebrities or sports stars were promoting the online gambling sites. Despite online gambling being illegal in Korea, the ads misused the names and logos of government agencies such as the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and included phrases like 'official' and 'legal' to create the false impression that the sites were legitimate.
In most cases, it was impossible to identify the advertisers.
KCA stated, "We have shared the investigation results with Meta Platforms Inc., the operator of Facebook, and requested cooperation to prevent similar or identical ads from being posted in the future."
