Choo Mi-ae, a lawmaker from the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) and Chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee at the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, is expected to officially announce her candidacy for Governor of Gyeonggi Province as early as next month and begin preparations.
According to a staff member from Choo's office on the 8th, Choo plans to step down from her position as Chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee once the reform bills currently being pushed by the ruling party pass the National Assembly's plenary session.
A staff member from Choo's office explained, "Since August, she has declined the position, citing preparations for next year’s local elections, but the party leadership continued to ask her to serve as committee chair. From the beginning, it was agreed that she would run in the local elections next year after completing key legislative tasks such as judicial reform."
Regarding recent reports that she had offered her resignation to the party leadership, the staff member stated, "That is not true. There was a verbal agreement with the leadership from the outset."
Currently, the main candidates being discussed for the DPK’s nomination for Governor of Gyeonggi Province include the incumbent Kim Dong-yeon, as well as lawmakers Kwon Chil-seung, Park Jung, Kang Deuk-gu, Kim Yong-min, and Tae-young Yeom.
