[Financial News] The police announced that they are tracking a suspect in connection with the Coupang personal data leak. Monitoring has also been strengthened to prevent secondary damage.
A police official stated at a regular press briefing on the 8th, "The complaint submitted by Coupang lists the suspect as unidentified. The dedicated investigation team at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) has secured the Internet Protocol (IP) used in the crime and is currently tracking the suspect."
Previously, Coupang filed a complaint with the police on the 25th of last month, requesting an investigation into the 'unidentified individual' for alleged intrusion under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (ICNA) following the large-scale data breach. After interviewing the complainant, the police are proceeding with the investigation using materials voluntarily submitted by Coupang.
The police official explained, "On the 28th of last month, we conducted an interview with Coupang as the complainant. So far, the investigation is ongoing based on the materials voluntarily submitted by Coupang." The official added, "If necessary, we can expand the investigation into any relevant area."
However, regarding the timing of a search and seizure at Coupang, the official commented, "It is difficult to disclose details as it is related to the investigation," and said, "We will proceed according to proper procedures."
The police are also intensifying monitoring of abuse cases to prevent secondary damage related to the Coupang incident.
The police official noted, "Since this incident has caused public anxiety, we are checking daily in real time for any abuse cases. There have also been instances where the Coupang case itself is used as a means of deception, and we are thoroughly verifying such cases as well."
